Oscar-winning filmmaker Paul Haggis has severed his ties with the Church of Scientology in protest against the sect's position on gays and its treatment of members, it was reported on Monday.

The Canadian-born director, who scooped Oscars for the hit films Crash and Million Dollar Baby, resigned from the organisation in a letter to church spokesman Tommy Davis.

The letter, which surfaced on the blog of former Scientologist Marty Rathbun, was dated August 19.

Churchgoers are more likely to back torture of suspected terrorists, according to a new survey by Pew. Per CNN:

More than half of people who attend services at least once a week — 54 percent — said the use of torture against suspected terrorists is “often” or “sometimes” justified. Only 42 percent of people who “seldom or never” go to services agreed, according the analysis released Wednesday by the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life.

Last night was cold and clear, but it certainly wasn’t quiet. Costumed bands of students hurtled across campus, going through the motions to gain acceptance into one of Yale’s senior societies, the groups of roughly 15 students who meet every Thursday and Sunday evening in their last year of college.

Among the juniors strung out along Elm and High streets yesterday evening was a lady dressed as “Sailor Moon,” a man decked in a rhinestone petticoat and another dressed as Little Bo Peep. Members of Wolf’s Head howled periodically throughout the night. Both Scroll and Key and Skull and Bones whisked off juniors in swanky black limos.

The Pope: Thermometer of Apostasy

HAVING traveled and preached in over 40 American states and nearly all of Canada’s provinces, I have been afforded a wide-ranging glimpse of the Church on this continent. I have met many wonderful lay people, deeply committed priests, and devoted and reverent religious. But they have become so few in number that I am beginning to hear the words of Jesus in a new and startling way:

When the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?(Luke 18:8)

The Scientology organisation has increasingly targeted poor countries such as Haiti in its recruitment efforts. Why would this money-hungry crime-cult be interested in one of the world's poorest countries? The answer: Because they want to bring Haitian's in to the USA on "religious worker" visas to serve as unpaid labourers.
