A Texas woman who took her sick dog to a veterinary clinic to be put down has discovered the pet was allegedly kept alive in secret for six months to harvest for blood transfusions.

Marian Harris took her five-year-old Leonberger, Sid, to Camp Bowie Animal Clinic in Fort Worth to be euthanased in October, the Star-Telegram reports. Ms Harris's long-time vet, Lou Tierce, allegedly told her the dog, which had been ill for several months, had a spinal defect and needed to be put down. Ms Harris says she left Sid at the clinic assuming he would be killed within 24 hours.

But six months later, Ms Harris received a call from former clinic employee Mary Brewer, who told her Mr Tierce had secretly kept Sid alive to use for blood transfusions, WFAA News reports.
